Governments, organizations, and individuals across the globe have adopted January 28 as Data Privacy Day, or DPD. This holiday was created to raise awareness about the effect of technology on our privacy rights, and the importance of ensuring that our personal information is protected.

For most people these issues aren’t the first thing they think about. If you’re one of those people, you’re not alone. A recent Microsoft survey found that only 44% of adults are actively thinking about the consequences of their online activities.

So much of our lives are being lived out on the web that sometimes it is difficult to control what information goes out. DPD reminds us of the serious consequences that can occur in our offline lives if we do not carefully manage our personal data and information.  These consequences include:  job loss, being turned down for a mortgage, and the like.

The most surefire way to protect online privacy and security is to be thoughtful about sharing personal information. This could be achieved by having secure passwords and changing them often, having full understanding of privacy settings in the web tools and websites you use, and being careful when using monitored or open networks. Another great way is to use a VPN when surfing the web. A VPN allows you to surf the internet without giving your true location.

Remember to always education yourself, your family, and friends on these issues. Learn more by reading this IPVanish re
