I don’t know when I got so into my hair, but now I’m pretty obsessive.  I guess it all started when I was 17 and was asked to be a hair model.  It’s not like I was famous or anything.  I just let these stylists dye and cut my hair however they wanted.  One woman that I would work for made hair videos.  Her name is Marcie and she is from Canada.  She discovered this way to cut hair with using the shape of a persons head.  She was making instructional videos to teach other stylists.  I would sit in a salon chair while she walked through her systematic way of cutting my hair.  Then I would parade around in a flashy outfit, showing off my new hairstyle.  She always cut and colored my hair in funky ways so it would take a few days to get use to it.  I would also do live shows.  They had these hair show conventions where all these people came to watch.  Most of them were stylists themselves trying to learn new techniques.  It was fun, sometimes I felt like a real model.  And I always got to dress up in cute clothes.  The last show I did was at Navy Pier on one of their boats.  In the beginning I was getting paid to do this work.  Then the stylists would give me free gifts.  But as I neared the end of my hair career, the free gifts and money stopped.  Since I was in college and working I figured I would stop anyways, I didn’t really have time.

After years and years of having my hair dyed all different colors and trying different styles I was addicted.  So I started doing my own hair.  I was at the point I was dying it every 3 weeks.  If I was in a bad mood, I’d dye my hair and I’d feel better.  Then I started getting hair extensions.  The first time I went I knew nothing about them, how many to get, or how much I should pay and tip.  The lady at Salon 212 talked me into getting 150 pieces.  My hair was full and beautiful when she was done.  It cost me $800!  Luckily I was single then and had some money to play with so it wasn’t a big deal.  But I learned the hard way how to take care of them and how many my hair could really hold.  150 were definitely too many.  In a couple of months of wearing them I had a huge rats nest in the back of my head.   That was fun to deal with!
